Did you Know? 5 Unique Qualities of Native New Zealand Plants

People from all over the world come to New Zealand to admire the natural beauty and breath-taking scenery of this land.

Thousands of awe-inspiring shots of New Zealand nature get posted, shared and liked on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and other platforms every day.

Native New Zealand plants hold many secrets. They are unique not only in their visual appeal but by their very character and nature.

They have 5 very special qualities that make them world champions when it comes to social skills, strength and vitality.

1. They co-operate and support each other

Taproots are long carrot-like roots that young trees in other forests around the world produce to anchor themselves into the earth while they are developing their main root system.

New Zealand native trees do not have taproots - the older and more established trees provide support to the younger ones.

The forest children (young trees) literally depend on their older neighbours for support. In turn, when the need arises, they will provide support to their young neighbours.

Native New Zealand forests are an all-inclusive close-knit community where trees from different families grow together in cooperation.

This quality of cooperation inherent in the native trees is important for many reasons. It is what makes them especially powerful when they are used in the form of flower essences.

2. They are imbued with vigour

New Zealand native trees hold on to their leaves.

During the process of transition from summer to winter, trees in Europe and other parts of the world cover park grounds and footpaths with multi-coloured leaves.

Native New Zealand trees, with very few exceptions, do not throw off their leaves. New Zealand bush bursts with colour and vigour throughout the year.

“The eye rested on the evergreen foliage of primeval forest, wonderfully

rich in the various contrast of its colours. Although the season was but

early spring, winter had laid its hand so gently on all nature that it

changed but little the aspect of the woods, which ever smiled, arrayed in

a garment of richest verdure.” – John Logan, Poenamo

New Zealand native bush looks like a complex tapestry of countless shades, tints and hues of green. It is a rare phenomenon for trees to maintain their leaves in temperate climate forests.

Because New Zealand trees are able to maintain their foliage all year round it is a sign that they contain exceptional levels of power.

3. New Zealand native plants are peace-loving

The 'push and shove' for ground, water and sunshine has never existed among New Zealand plants. The original New Zealand ecosystem has known no toxic warfare.

In other parts of the world, plants release chemicals, known as turpenes or allelochemicals, from their roots into the soil to prevent other plants from growing near them.

The Walnut tree, for example is world famous for its ability to monopolise the land. Pine trees are notorious for dropping and scattering their needles to stops other plant species getting close.

New Zealand native bush grows like one big family making it the only bush in the world where plants from different families co-exist peacefully together.

“New Zealand’s eco-system is a completely different experiment in

evolution from the rest of the world.” – T F Flannery, The Future Eaters:

An Ecological History of the Australasian Lands and People

4. New Zealand native flowers are tiny and full of vigour.

A strong magnifying glass is an indispensable item of a keen botanist’s toolkit in New Zealand.

Unlike other areas of the world, New Zealand has never had native nectar-gathering bees as part of its original eco-system. New Zealand has very small native bees that do not have the same nectar-gathering, honey-making focus as the honeybee or bumble bee.

Because New Zealand native flowers get pollinated by butterflies, moths, beetles and birds, they do not have to grow massive flowers to attract and compete for nectar-gathering bees.

5. Qualities of purity and healing

New Zealand has many white and green coloured flowers.

White coloured flowers are easy for moths to see in the moonlight and small white and green native flowers are often overlooked by tourists and bushwalkers.

White flowers have an energetic association with spiritual purity while green flowers have an energetic association with the higher altruistic qualities of healing and love.

The qualities of purity and healing through love are encoded in New Zealand’s native flowers.

These qualities can be accessed and transferred to us when we take First Light Natural Health® flower essence blends that contain First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand made from these special New Zealand native flowers.
